Recently, NashvilleVoyager Magazine invited us to sit down and talk about how North Star Nature Suites™ North Star began. There is something clarifying about tracing your own story out loud, and what caught us off guard was how little of it turned out to be about the property at all.
So rather than leave those reflections in a magazine, we wanted to bring the heart of that conversation to you, our guests, and share the soul of North Star Nature Suites™ in our own words. Finding Our Corner of Tennessee
When they asked how it all began, we found ourselves going back long before the property itself. Between the two of us, we spent six decades learning how to take care of people. Kevin gave more than thirty years to health and fitness, guiding others toward stronger, more intentional lives. Amalia spent three decades in interior design and founded Matriarch Design, shaping spaces meant to hold and comfort the people inside them.
So when we left Minnesota for Tennessee in 2021, we were not chasing a business plan so much as following an instinct. Two lifetimes of work, it turned out, pointed toward the same thing: environments that let people slow down and feel restored.
Not long after we arrived, we found the land near Sparta, and something quietly clicked into place. Standing on that secluded ground at the edge of protected wilderness, we knew this was where our next chapter belonged.
Building Something Worth Protecting
When the conversation turned to whether the road had been smooth, we did not have to reach far for an answer. Creating a nature retreat Tennessee travelers would drive hours to reach was, honestly, harder than we imagined. Building from the ground up meant navigating rising costs, long supply chain delays, and a hundred small decisions that each threatened the timeline and the budget.
What kept us steady through all of it was a question we returned to again and again. We were never simply making a product. We were protecting an experience, and every choice, down to the smallest one, had to serve that.
That principle became our filter for everything. If a shortcut compromised how a guest would feel when they arrived, it was never worth the savings.
Hospitality is never truly finished, and we believe the smallest details often leave the greatest impression.

When a couple tells us they arrived worn thin and left remembering exactly why they chose one another, that is the entire point. The suites are only ever the setting. What we are most proud of is what happens inside them: the conversations, the stillness, the reconnection that follows people all the way back to their ordinary lives.
